Aruna Irani is a famous Indian Hindi actress. An accomplished actress and dancer of her time, Aruna Irani has acted in about 300 movies, with many memorable acting performances to her credit.
Aruna Irani was one of the undisputed queens of the item dance. With Helen and Bindu, Aruna ruled the Bollywood playing the 'bad girl' as counterpoint to the movie's demure heroine.
Family
Born on May 3, 1952 Aruna Irani made her debut in the movie Ganga Jumna (1961) at nine years old playing Vyjayantimala's character as a child. Irani is the sister of film-maker Indra Kumar and actor Adi Irani (one who became her son in movie Beta). An accomplished actress and dancer of her time, Aruna Irani has acted in about 300 movies, with many memorable acting performances to her credit. Aruna is the sister of film-maker Indra Kumar. Aruna is married to film director Kuku Kohli.
Biography
After doing several small roles in films like Jahanara, Farz, Upkaar and Aaya Sawan [hoomke, and pairing with comedian Mehmood in films like Aulad, Humjoli and Naya Zamana, she finally shot to fame with her brilliant performance as an aggressive gypsy woman in the super hit Caravan.
Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s she appeared in several supporting roles, notably Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Do Jhooth, Khel Khel Mein, Bhanwar, Fakira, Laila Majnu, Sargam, Qurbani, Aas Paas, Love Story and Kudrat.
She finally won her first Film fare Best Supporting Actress Award for Pet, Pyaar Aur Paap. In the late 1980s and 1990s, she switched to playing motherly roles, notably in Beta for which she won her second Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. She also did very good acting in many Gujarati films and some way changed trend and played as main protagonist.
Aruna also acted in many television shows like Des Me Nikla Hoga Chand, Mehndi Tere Naam Ki, Tum Bin [aaoo Kahan, Rabba Ishq Na Howe, Naaginn etc. Aruna Irani has had a long and rich career that has spanned over 30 years. She is currently acting, directing, and producing, for both film and television.
One of her most memorable recent roles was in Yash Chopra's "Dil To Pagal Hai"(1997) where she played Madhuri Dixit's mentor and spiritual conscience the dance teacher Tai. This role has a certain touching historical context as Aruni Irani's former incarnation as a 'vamp' item dance queen paved the way for Madhuri Dixit who is the current 'heroine' item dance queen.
